New Mercies Every Morning

The Bible says in the book of

Lamentations 3:22-24 (ESV), “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Have you ever embraced the truth that God’s mercies are new every morning? This means that God has a fresh supply of mercies for you every single day. It is yours for the asking. The Bible also says, “For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him (Ps 103:11, NKJV). How high are the heavens above the earth? According to the Word of God there is a third heaven, so it can be implied that there is a first and second heaven. The Bible says as high as the heavens are above the earth, so it must be talking about all three heavens. If you go by today’s understanding of “the heavens” — meaning the totality of the universe outside Earth — they are approximately 46 billion light years higher. In fact, the heavens are so high above the Earth that human beings cannot possibly see everything in them. Let me explain that a little more. Light from the farthest reaches of space has only had 13.8 billion years to travel to Earth.

Can you imagine how great God’s mercies are if they are as high as the heavens is above the earth. So why don’t we tap into this infinite supply of mercy on a daily basis. Go ahead and ask God for brand new mercies today. The Psalmist David understood how merciful God is so after he sinned against God by numbering Israel, the Prophet Gad was sent by God to David to mete out the consequences of David’s sin. David had to choose one of three consequences, the first consequence was three years of famine, the second consequence was to flee three months before his enemies while they pursued him and the third consequence was to have three days plague in the land. The Psalmist David understood how merciful God is and so he refused to be punished by man and so he automatically ruled out the consequence of being pusued by his enemies for three months. Listen to what king David said, “And David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Please let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man.” NKJV (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), 2 Sa 24:14.

The Prophet Jonah understood the greatness of God’s mercy. After he preached in Nineveh and the judgement of God was averted, Jonah accused God of being too merciful with the Ninevites. The Bible says, “But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. 2 So he prayed to the LORD, and said, “Ah, LORD, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in loving-kindness, One who relents from doing harm. 3 Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live!” NKJV (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Jon 4:1–3.

Since God is such a merciful God, why don’t more people experience His mercy? I believe that we have not because we ask not. Let us ask God for mercy in every area of our lives today and we will become recipients of His mercy.
